JOE'S STORY

Los Angeles native Israel aka Joe Black has been mashing up international stages for nearly a decade now. With his abundance of talent Joe Black is easily one of the most entertaining artist freelancing in the industry right now. Joe started out first as a dj and breakdancing in his L.A neighbourhood at a time that's referred to as the golden era of hip hop before the bling became the thing. After a few injuries dancing he decided to focus his energies more to the musical aspect of this young growing genre, and began learning instruments, drum machine programming and the art of rhyming.
Once he became secure in his abilities he started forming groups with neighbourhood friends and entering talent shows often winning. Israel formed the group "Rebel Souls" playing a blend of reggae, hip hop and dance hall. Joe and his band became a highly sought after act . They were often asked to open for touring acts like Steel Pulse & Ras Micheal and sons of Negus and was voted best upcoming band in the city in 91' by local mags.
It was after the riots in L.A. that Joe was bitten with the travel bug and packed up his belongings and with $300 dollars, bought a one way ticket to London. In no time Joe had made inroads with the local muso lads around Covent Gardens and became a regular at jam nights with musicians of all genres.
It was these jam sessions that inspired Joe to start writing and producing music seriously, while still trying to make a name for himself in dj circles. A chance meeting saw Joe arrive in australia to perform and conduct music workshops around the whole continent. For him it was back to Joe's hip hop roots from where he came that he was sharing with audiences.
Not one to forget his own sometimes difficult teen years, Joe spends a great deal of time travelling to schools and remote aboriginal communities sharing his musical experience through workshops that targets at risk youth . Joe has performed in youth detention centres and schools throughout Australia. He has also recorded some of the youths from Sydney's Redfern area. Joe did a stint at Father Riley's Youth Of The Streets (YOTS), as a mentor to young kids in detention homes.
Joe has also toured Australia extensively and performed at some of the countries biggest music festivals including Big Day Out, Vibes on a Summers Day and Bellingen Global Carnival.
Joe is now known as a talentforce whether he's rapping, djaying or producing tracks for his own United States of Music imprint. He is a radio presenter for Bondi 88fm with his own sunday show "United States of Music" and can be caught mashing up venues all over this big red continent. Joe's DJ style is a mix of true school hip hop, reggae and dub seamlessly blended to work any crowd into a frenzy. He is also a part of a collective known as Dub Activ8 that play various events around the city. If you get a chance be sure to check out Joe Black, don't miss it.
