Creativity for Healthy Communities (excerpt
by Judith Chestnut)
Carl Jung, the Swiss psychologist, believed that self understanding would lead to
a full and productive life. Jung conceived and edited the book; Man and His Symbols,
which is often used as the starting point for studies of visual arts. He
is reported to have led a happy life and was writing up until the day he died.
The following quote from one of his writings may inspire others to also
search for a better understanding of not only themselves but also those with whom
they share their work and their life. Love has many facets and perhaps some
of these facets need polishing and putting on display so that others can share this
special quality.
The creation of something
new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner
necessity.
The creative mind plays with the object it loves.
CARL JUNG
Dancers, musicians, painters, sculptors, architects, writers and all the others
who develop their creative talents play with the medium they love. To the dancer
it may be the music, the discipline of purpose, the sharing of choreographic ideas
or just the simple act of moving across a stage that becomes the catalyst for this
love to be transmitted. Artists have an inner necessity to make something,
to share an idea. This creativity can be shared through performances, exhibitions,
displays and published works. To encourage these ways of sharing will encourage
others to explore their creativity. The encouragement of play and love
certainly must be a positive move toward building healthier communities.
