bruce naylor has been directing, teaching and working in the theatre for twenty years. He trained at the Victorian College of the Arts actors course in 1988 — 90 and in 1991 was the recipient of the ANZ travelling fellowship which allowed him to spend a year in Japan working with the Japanese Theatre Master Tadashi Suzuki and his Suzuki Company of Toga as well as with various Butoh groups, most notably Hakutobo and Dai Rakuda Kan. He was a member of the Playbox/Suzuki Company of Toga project ‘The Chronicles of Macbeth’ which toured Australia and Japan. Upon returning to Melbourne he founded The Johakyu Orchestra, a physical theatre ensemble which synthesised these dance and physical theatre techniques into a coherent training utilising the Japanese Noh Theatre principles of Jo Ha Kyu. Bruce will offer two intensely contrasting movement workshops at Stamping Ground 06 based on the principles of Ha and Kyu. |
| Ha -
Japanese Noh Theatre term literally meaning to cut Ha - describes energy moving away from the body, exploding out into space |
Ha -This workshop will explore the energy of explosive movement and the energy of explosive stillness. Through the work we will learn how to tap into the sort of energy states a sprinter must access the moment before the gun goes off - a state both extremely energised and relaxed at the same time and we will learn to utilise it in physical theatre. We will study the stomping and statue movements of Tadashi Suzuki’s theatre technique, the animal etudes of Butoh dance and various martial exercises, exploring concepts of performance under tension, and how to use tension in physical theatre in a constructive and skilful manner. No previous dance experience is necessary, but this will be a highly physical workshop. Please bring a pair of thick socks. |
| Kyu -This workshop is the flipside of the Ha workshop. We will study the slow movement exercises of Tadashi Suzuki technique and the interior image landscapes of the Japanese dance form Butoh. The workshop will concentrate on generating movement through a series of intense interior images. One of primary innovations of the Japanese dance form of Butoh was to reverse the traditional structure of the choreographer laying movement upon the body of the Dancer who then has to find a path through the choreography which allows them to dance with meaning and authenticity. In Butoh the choreographer stimulates movement through images, which the dancer responds to, creating dance that comes from a fundamentally different and much more authentic place. The process of working with these images trains the dancer to find this place of intense concentration and poeticism within themselves. No previous dance experience is necessary. |
